Valley Preferred Cycling Center Facts
- “Velo” is short for the French word “velocipede”, meaning bicycle
- The Lehigh Valley Velodrome was built in 1975, and is one of only 20 velodromes in the U.S.
- The man behind the dream of bringing a velodrome to the Lehigh Valley was Bob Rodale. It is through his efforts and dedication that we now have one of the finest track racing facilities in the country.
- The track is 333 m in length.
-Three (3) laps = One (1) Kilometer
-One (1) Kilometer = 0.625 miles
-Straight-aways are banked at approximately 11 degrees.
-Turns achieve a maximum banking of approximately 28 degrees. - The surface is a concrete composite called Chemcom.
- Track bikes have no brakes and a single “fixed” gear
-There is no coasting.
- Sprinters regularly reach speeds of up to 45+ mph
-Tandems reach speeds of over 55 mph. - Cyclists compete against each other, as individuals or as teams or race alone against the clock.
- The summer schedule includes International racing during the World Series of Bicycling (Fridays), Super Tuesdays Program – Amateur & Pro Series (Tuesdays), Futures Stars - Junior Racing (Tuesdays) and the Masters & Rookies Racing Series (Saturdays).
-Community programs run all summer long from May through August. - The mission of the VPCC is to operate the world’s best track by:
-Hosting international-caliber professional racing in the Lehigh Valley;
-Fostering the advancement and maturation of future generations of track racers, through in-house developmental programs;
-Introducing the community to cycling, as a sport, and;
-Enhancing the quality of life within the community by educating participants to positive lifestyle choices (i.e. fitness/wellness), through lifetime fitness pursuits.
